Death of a publication-Chitrabhumi
It is with great regret i am hearing the closure of chithrbhumi, which I thought would go on until the cinemas are dead.We have seen the end of many big magazines,we cried at the passing away of all
Because it has shaped us, our opinions were formed after it.
For me even after i have left Mathrubhumi daily a quarter century ago, chitrabhumi was one magazine i refused not to be identified with/For I have spend five years of blood and sweat to it in its formative years
While others were extolling the virtue of an actor or director we have criticized them,we have asked them the right questions ,on the dot.
For me it was a magazine which has shaped the sensibilities of several years, which has captured the golden age of Malayalam cinema.
The editor who started it Gopi Pazhayannor was classical in style, but the man who shaped it as a force was Janradhnann, who died premature.
I was transferred to chennai and he was in charge of the magazine.
He was one of the real editors against whom I bow my head in respect for he had taught me the first lessons in real editorship. I am wondering whether i would have become what I am now without his guidance
He guided me like a real editor when covering cinema beat which was controlled till then by umpteen PROs and we made it a big success.
I am remembering many of the stories we broke ,many of the issues we got
We fought with artists, directors, producers and wrote which was new and different.
As the Madras correspondent i have to bear the fall out of many of the escapades the desk has done. Like the great Ranji Panickar whose words had the sharpness of an arrow. Time has proved us right but Janardhan was dumped to an innocous world
I remember seeing him in hotel Nalanada which wreaked of the smell of liquour, a soul died under the pressure of professional duties
Without him I would not have written on Prem Nazir, Shardha,John Aabraham,Aravindan and countless others
I remember Adoor Bhasi introducing me chitra ,who was just a novice then
I remember MBS talking of John Abraham In agaraharathile kazhuthey
Brahmanadan, who was set aside by the so called music heroes waiting for me at dead of the night to have a small trest.
There are countless instances of life and death.Rani Padmini and the like The artist consuming poison, the artist spurning all.The megastar in the hiding
There was a time i have written about a big director. Then editor,M D Nalppadu when complained asked him to go to hell and stood with me.It was pain,it was difficult to be part of a world where we have just our pen and the publication to look forward too.But my great asset was my great editors like Janaradhanan who stood with me or MD Nalappattu..Or guru like companion-Chandraji
For me the death of a magazine is nothing but for the readers and the artists it would be one because it would have been a part of their time and life.
